Hale'akala is a dormant volcano on the island of Maui. Its peak is at 10,023 feet, and its crater measures 20 miles in circumference -- one of the largest in the world. The name means "House of the Sun"; in Hawaiian mythology, the god Maui lifted the sky so men could walk upright, raised land from the bottom of the ocean, brought fire to man and made the sun move slower so days would be longer.
