Nits for Star Trek: Voyager episode
Someone to Watch Over Me

1. "You're a woman, Seven?".

I found this bit of dialogue rather sexist. Doc could have pointed out that being human has repercussions hard to deny, and the statement would have been accurate and would not have suggested one gender having difficulty denying the "repercussions", without also mentioning that the other gender has the same difficulties. The dialogue suggests that women have this problem but also implies that men do not have this problem (since men were not mentioned).

And for what it's worth, Doc might have also noted that Seven has had remarkable success denying these repercussions despite her humanity and gender.

Nit Value: 0.25

2. Species 8472.

Now where did Doc get the picture of two 8472s in a 'loving embrace'?? And how did he learn that 8472s have five genders?? The background scenery looks like they are amongst the bushes, and "In The Flesh" clearly indicated that the 8472s were supposed to retain their human appearance at all times.

Nit Value: 1.00

3. "Half the guys".

What does it say about 24th century men when "half the guys" would "jump at the chance" to date Seven, but won't ask her because they're convinced it would be a "disaster"? Why would they "jump at the chance"? Her looks? It couldn't possibly be because of her personality (which obviously keeps them away). Are men still so insecure in the 24th century that they will ask a girl on a date only to have sex, not to explore their compatibility? Are the only people capable of exploring Seven's personality to be women, a Vulcan male, and a holographic doctor? Is she to be condemned to spinster-hood because men don't have the patience to get to know someone?

Why is Voyager slamming men like this?

Nit Value: 0.50

4. The bet.

Why is Doc accepting this bet? Why isn't he more concerned with giving Seven the time she needs to develop than he is with rushing her to be ready by "Thursday" so he can win a bet with Tom?

And why is Tom making a bet that will cause a "diplomatic incident" if he wins? Doesn't he care about the ship getting the needed minerals which Janeway is trying to secure?

And why didn't Tom insist that Doc couldn't be the "date"?

Nit Value: 2.00

5. Doc designs clothing?

At least now we know who to blame for her catsuit and heels, not to mention this rather provocative outfit shown in the Sangrine Bar. How did Doc medically determine the consequences of wearing pointy-toed high heels on a woman accustomed to Borg boots?

Nit Value: 0.50

6. Doc at the piano.

Has Chapman ever met Doc? And if so, isn't he just a little curious to know why Doc happens to be playing the piano for their date?

Nit Value: 0.25

7. Seven in Sick Bay.

After Seven leaves the reception, we find a drunken Tomin in Sick Bay, surrounded by Doc, Neelix, Tom, and Seven. Why is Seven there? She left the room before Tomin collapsed. Did someone call her to Sick Bay? Why? And where is Chakotay? Doesn't the commander of the ship have some interest in what happens to the ambassador whose drunken state will affect the trade agreement?
